Skye Holiday 4 - Tuesday 8th June 2010

Skye from Raasay

Woke up rested and feeling great on this little Island of dreams. All plans of exploring this wee Island on two wheels were abandoned when I found that the prevailing wind was just as prevailing in the morning. In retrospect what did I expect on a tiny Scottish Island on the edge of the Atlantic? So I took to my polluting piece of tin and started out on the long road, spent a pleasant hour or two passing lots of grass, rocks and sheep not to mention amazing views. Came to an ancient Pirate Castle and shortly afterwards came to the end of the road so there was nothing more to do but turn round.

The End of The Road

Set off back down the road, bumped into my only fellow hosteler from the previous evening and had a nice wee chat, about hosteling and cycling ( he was brave enough to face the prevailing winds on two wheels)

Raasay Youth Hostel
Then came back to my starting point, the lovely rustic but comfortable Raasay hostel, to stay here :http://www.syha.org.uk/home.aspx. What more to do than complete the long road and head on to the short road. Where I encountered yet more rock's, grass and sheep, but again countered by some amazing views. I also hit a bloody big rock in my car, but it didn't seem to any damage. After reaching the end of the road once more  it was time to once more head over the sea to Skye .

Almost the end of the Road again

Arriving back on Skye with the "Smoking Cullins"

Arriving back on Skye I headed for my planned stop of the evening, the principal village (town) via the village of Broadford and the first of many, hey this is a random one track road it there so I'm gonna drive it moments!

Arrived back in Portree, found the Co-op (again) and had some lunch and got on the Internet for the first time in day's, walking round Portree, lovely place but quite touristy, particularly after the little piece of heaven I'd found on Raasay in the previous 24 hours. I was getting a bad vibe from the place particularly when I snuck in to the hostel I was due to stay in .I also had a great feeling about Dun Flodigarry, the place I was due to stay at the following night so I decided to go on the hoof and try and get a night in the hostel a day early. This was my first real encounter with one track roads, yeah I'd had a wee flirtation  with them on Raasay and earlier that day, but none of those roads had actual other moving vehicles on them , was a bit scary at first until I got the hang of them there passing places. All the way up there I had the feeling that I was entering a little Nirvana in Scotland and my hands were gripped to the steering wheel thinking please, please have a bed for me.

When I got there I was welcomed by the lovely Bryan who was happy to offer me a bed for the night and also chat and shoot the breeze a little. After showering and eating there was nothing more to do than sit and chill and watch the changing moods as dusk settled over the flodigarry garden, oh and also get eaten alive by the midges !
